Kinja'd!!!

It might just be time to pour one out for my beloved 01 Golf. We had a CEL a couple weeks ago, and they replaced a couple sensors. But now the light is back on, and it feels like it might be missing a cylinder. If it’s too much to fix, I’ll be putting it out to pasture. Nice view from the cab of the wrecker, though.

I’ll bet you get such a deal on a TDI!

2.0? Those engines are almost impossible to kill, I’d be surprised if it’s more than a coil unit.

missing a cylinder.

This is why you have a check engine light. To notice when the cylinders start to go missing before the whole engine disappears. Unlucky people open the hood to find nothing but an 11 horse Briggs and Stratton single, sometimes.

I feel your pain. Both of our DDs are getting to that gray area wherein each trip to the shop could be their last.

It’s a bittersweet time.

Sorry to hear about your Golf. Next time get a Toyota :)

I’ve never noticed it before, but that panel between the rear door and the hatch/rear fascia is just screaming to be painted a different color than the rest of the car.

Quick tip from a cheapskate grad student who has done 2.slow repairs for friends: grab a squirt/spritz bottle, get the car running, point it at the coil pack, and get that sucker damp. There’s not a lot which makes these engines misfire regularly, but the coilpacks crack and then you have a bad time. I have a pile of cores (not exactly sure why...) in my garage to demonstrate this point. Also, go on one of the various forum options (Vortex...if you dare - although the regional forums are ok, or perhaps the VW subreddit) and see if someone local has a VAG-COM/RossTech cable. You’ll get a lot more info than a basic OBD scanner. Otherwise, it’s time for that car to go LeMons racing!

It could just be the typical coil. not too bad i think

Did you see the CEL flashing at all?

And to some people, an 11hp Briggs and Stratton is an improvement.

I am with the others, I would give the ignition systems a good check. Find someone with VAG-COM/RossTech and have them run a diagnostic. 2.slow engines are pretty bullet proof.

Yup. Misfiring.

01? I’m going with a bad coil pack. When was the last time you swapped the plugs?

Coil and plugs were replaced maybe 4 years ago. It is not original.

RIP Coil pack. Should be an easy fix, though.

That seems to be the general consensus.

Def a coil pack. 2.slow engines were pretty good.

This one has definitely taken some abuse. I'm even on the original clutch after 224000 miles. We'll see what the mechanic $ay$.

Oh coil packs aren’t too bad buddy. Mine was only like $116 or something. And the car sounded like a tractor. lol.

Hmm, if spark is good, have a look at fuel. How many miles on the injectors? I’d run some seafoam/techron through it first.

Agreed, I've had a few of them. They get and deserve a lot of grief for being antiquated and under powered, but they are dang near bullet proof.
